What is a coordination study?
A coordination study is the investigation of an electrical system to ensure that over-current protective relays, breakers and equipment are properly designed, adjusted and coordinated to isolate a faulted circuit.
Coordination studies enhance the uninterrupted electrical service at your facilities by showing how the circuit closest to any fault can clear that fault before any other circuit is interrupted. A one-line circuit drawing is essential, toward accomplishing this goal. It is a little more complex than to simply put the smallest fuse or circuit breaker at the end of the line, a bigger one feeding perhaps two or three small ones, and a bigger one yet upstream from that, but that is the general idea. Other factors enter that picture, especially if there is rotating equipment and by recognizing that “fast” or “slow” fuses or breaker trip selections, even with the same ultimate trip ratings, can provide selectivity. These can all be sorted out to make a reliable system by means of a coordination study.
